Trial Tuesday: DIY Spray Paint Test

While looking for hacks recently, I came across a post for DIY Spray Paint on Pinterest. This hack was 1 of 31 life hacks published by Buzzfeed.com. When I saw this post, I became very excited and skeptical, both at the same time. For this reason, DIY Spray Paint is my trial of the week.

From Buzzfeed.Com

What You Need
  • 2 Parts Acrylic Paint
  • 1 Part Water
  • Plastic Spray Bottle

My Supplies

The water bottle was only $0.97 and the paint is $0.50, both purchased at Walmart. While the bottle is huge compared to the paint, for trial purposes I was sure to use the whole bottle of paint. For the water, I added it into my paint bottle to make sure that I was only using the amount necessary.

TRIAL
I used an old Pringle's Can to spray. Since this is made of cardboard, I assumed it would take the paint pretty easily.

Results After-

5 Sprays

10 Sprays

15 Sprays

20 Sprays

Back of Can

Wasted Paint

After 12 Hours
Drying

RESULTS: FAIL

I would not do this method again! While you get some paint transfer, there is no control when spraying from the plastic bottle. Not to mention, this would take forever with all of the sprays and layers that you would have to do. The paint comes out watery and bumpy. It also runs quickly. And adding more paint doesn't really help the mixture. After this test, I know that will always choose quality and pay for my spray paint.

Follow my DIY board on Pinterest to see what I may be up to next. And please, send me Pins to try out!

**What should I test next? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!**

  1. I would suggest you redo your test but on wood. The cardboard tube of the pringles can wasn't good to try this on. But if you didn't have a lot of control with the spray bottle, then it might not even work on wood. But I love that you try these things and let us know about them!

    1. I love doing them, I feel like I am in 8th grade science again or something lol. Thank you for the input! I would like to try it again in the future but I would need to buy the supplies again. My next question would be do you have to use the paint right away or will it keep? Hmm

  2. Acrylic paint will keep if you do not open the bottle or after opening it, you close it tightly and keep it closed. If it dries, it will be a solid mass. If you are talking about the paint that you might still have in that spray bottle, check it but most likely it has now hardened. Nothing can be done with it then. You might try poster paint though. That might work better than acrylic.

    1. Thanks for your input! I will have to try poster paint. This was still a fail because it said acrylic paint. Don't bother with acrylic! LOL :)
