Makeup Monday: Sock Bun for Medium Length Hair

One of my favorite and quick hairstyles that I have been doing for years is the sock bun. When I was in Elementary School, I remember cutting up my dad's tube socks to make hair buns. Today, doughnut meshes can be purchased at all beauty supply stores and I have even seen them at Dollar Tree.

While there is a "proper way" to roll the doughnut into your hair, if your hair isn't long it can be tricky! I currently have a shoulder length, angled bob with layers. Basically, my hair is short and uneven. With this being said, you too can achieve a full-sized bun.

If you don't already have a bun, here is how to make your own:

Directions
1. Cut the tip of the sock off.
2. Roll the sock down. And done.

If you have dark hair, use a black sock.

How To Use Your Hair Doughnut

1. Put your hair in a ponytail. Ideally you want the ponytail to be at the crown of your head but it can sit lower if your hair isn't long enough.

2. After your ponytail is tied tightly, use hairspray to smooth and secure your hair.

When you have short hair, your ponytail can look really small and flat:

3. Use a comb and hair spray to tease your ponytail hair. To tease your hair simply spray with hairspray and comb up and down on small chunks of strands near the root.

After teasing, your hair will have volume like this:

4. Place your doughnut around your ponytail.

5. Let your hair fall equally around the doughnut.

6. Begin to tuck your hair around the doughnut, being sure to cover the doughnut.

7. Secure your bun with an elastic tie.

If you have pieces that stick out, just use bobby pins to secure them.

8. Secure your hairdo with a maximum hold hairspray.

Make it Fancy
Add a bow to the top or bottom for extra security

Also secures fly-aways

**Do you "sock bun"? Do you have the mesh or a sock? Or will you try this? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!**

  1. What a great idea! Your bun always looks so perfect and now I know your secret. I might have to try this. Of course I'll have to get some grey socks! Ha ha!

    1. AHA, thank you! You can just use white too; white socks in brown or black hair is pretty noticeable.
