Thrifty Thursday: DIY Memo Board
If you follow my blog than you will already know that recently I have done a few DIYs to update my daughter's bedroom. The last item that I made for her room was a memo board. This board consists of a cork board, chalkboard, and dry erase section. While she already has a big, standing chalkboard/ dry erase board that we keep in the playroom, she is loving this new board on her wall. If you are interested in seeing what I did, keep reading!
What You Will Need
- A Frame, the larger the better
- Cork board (Dollar Tree)
- Scrapbook Paper
- Chalkboard Paint
- Painters Tape
- Acrylic Paint (Your Choice Of Color)
- Elmer's Glue or Mod Podge
- Hot Glue/ Glue Gun
$3.00 at Goodwill |
From Dollar Tree- crafting section |
Directions
1. Remove the back of the frame, On the side that will be your background, glue down the scrapbook paper to one side. This will be the background to your dry erase board so make sure that you choose a light background.
On this frame, the picture side was raised so I opted to use the back of the frame since the hooks weren't on the cardboard.
At first I just used school glue but I decided to Mod Podge it down afterward.
2. Put your frame back together and measure out where you want your cork board by placing it on top. Then use painters tape to mark off your chalkboard line and protect the frame.
3. The chalkboard paint that I used was by Rustoleum, I know that there are other brands that work just as well out there, like Martha Stewart Brand.
First Coat |
To make sure that the chalkboard paint takes, you should do each coat in a different direction to create a thick layer. Sorry but my second layer picture was blurry.
After Three Coats |
4. While your paint is drying, hot glue the cork board to the other side of your frame. If you cannot find the small cork board from Dollar Tree, you can always buy a sheet at a craft store and cut it to side. Make sure that it is thick enough that you are able to use it on your glass.
5. Remove your painters tape before the paint is completely dry to avoid pulling the paint up with the tape. To clean up the transition, paint a line to cover where the chalkboard ends and the rest of the board begins.
And you are done!
The letter "L" in this picture was made to match the memo board. The flowers have the same pattern. You can check that DIY out here.
