Makeup Monday: Curling Iron Basics

A few weeks ago I posted a Hot Roller Tutorial that was pretty popular on Pinterest. This got me thinking about other simple hair tool tutorials that I could do to follow. To continue with the curly hair theme, this week I will be focusing on how to use a curling iron.

This tutorial will stick to basic hair curling, including how to curl your hair toward and away from your face. This method is great to use as a combo if you want a pretty, casual curl.

What You Will Need:

  • Curling Iron (barrel size of your choice)
  • Brush
  • Comb
  • Heat Protecting Spray
  • Hair Spray
  • Hair Clips (to separate hair)

Directions:
Your hair will curl best with unwashed hair. Brush your hair and part it the way you want your hair to fall after being curled.

Put the top part of your hair up using your clips.

Use heat protecting spray on your sectioned hair.

This is the amount of hair that you should be curling at one time. The larger the amount of hair that you curl at once, the less of a curl you will have.

Excuse my toilet :)

Curling Toward Your Face
The barrel should be in the front of your hair, clamp in the back.

Clamp down and roll the curling iron inward (toward your face). With this method, the curling iron will be on the top of your hair. For example on the right side you would roll the curling iron forward/ to the left.

Using this method, you will get a tight curl.

Curling Away From Your Face
The barrel should be in the back of your hair, clamp in the front.

Clamp down and roll the curling iron outward (away your face). With this method, the curling iron will be under your hair. For example, on the right side you would roll the curling iron right (back).

This method creates loose curls (beach curls) and would be considered a more natural-looking method.

After curling the piece, just use your fingers to loosen and separate.

If you use a combo of over and under curling all over, you should get results similar to this:

Finish the look with hairspray. This is also a great way to start a half or full updo. Or, just add clips or a flower because it is Spring!

And I have to add a special thank you to my hair model, Princess Tiana-Lola. Mommy loves you!! <3

**How often do you curl your hair? Leave it in the comments below. I don't often but this is the simple method that I use when I do. I hope that you enjoyed this post and thanks for reading!

  1. Lola's hair is long! I have to ask: if Lola was the model, and your hands were both working the curling iron........ who took the photos?
