Thrifty Thursday: DIY Room Decor Ideas

Recently, my daughter asked me if we could change her room around because "she's not 4 anymore and wants a big girl room". I agreed because I appreciated her reasoning. So to save some money I changed her decals and got her a new comforter, but I still wanted to add more. While thrifting soon after, I came across a few items that I knew I could make new and add to her room as decor.

Mod Podged Wooden Letter

This wooden letter was purchased from Value Village but is originally from Hobby Lobby (retail $2.99). The letter was marked as $1.00 but it was half price Saturday so I only paid $0.50. I know that you can find these letters pretty much anywhere that sells crafting supplies so this project can be easily duplicated.

What You Will Need

  • Wooden letter(s) of your choice
  • Paper of your choice (newspaper, foil paper, or scrap booking paper)
  • Mod Podge
  • Sponge brush

Place your letter face down on the back of the surface area that you will use and trace it.

After tracing, cut the letter out.

Make sure that your paper cut-out fits correctly on your letter. If it looks good, remove the paper, add Mod Podge to the entire surface of the letter, and place the paper back on top. Be sure that you don't have any air bubbles when you re-lay the paper.

Then, Mod Podge over the top of the paper.

Here is how the letter turned out:

Chalkboard Welcome Sign

This was another $1.00 item that I got half price, which makes me so happy! And I knew just what I wanted to do with it. This item can be found at Dollar Tree but I have only seen them around the holidays.

What You Will Need

  • Metal Serving Tray
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Ribbon or Twine
  • Hot Glue Gun/ Glue
  • Chalk or Chalk Markers (magical!!)

Start with a clean tray and add a layer of chalkboard paint. You can cover the entire surface or just do the tray portion like I did.

According to the directions, you will get the best results if you paint the first layer in one direction and the second in the opposite direction. The first coat should only take an hour to dry and the paint is completely dry after 4 hours. I personally still waited longer to apply the second coat and to let it dry.

After the paint dried, I used a hot glue gun to add a ribbon to hang the sign. Since the plate isn't perfectly straight, it was easy to add the ribbon evenly.

And that's it! I used chalkboard markers that I got from Amazon to decorate the sign.

**Thanks for reading! Have you tried chalkboard paint yet? I totally jumped on the bandwagon late but it's pretty amazing! I hope that you enjoyed this post. Have a great weekend!!**

  1. Hint: when you decoupage paper down, just glue the back down first. Then to get air bubbles out, roll a rolling pin over it a couple of times! I always had trouble with air bubbles. They used to say prick an air bubble with a straight pin and then squeeze the air out. But then you'd have an ever so slight hole in the paper. Using the rolling pin, no holes! I love the idea of using those dollar store trays too!
