Thrifty Thursday: Wooden Frame Refinish Using Acrylic Paint

As I mentioned last week, I caught the half-price sale at Value Village recently and found some great items to refinish. One item that I always look for at the thrift store are wooden frames. Older wooden frames, in my opinion, are better quality than the heavy plastic frames that are more common today. And most times are $1.00 or less.

The two frames that I found were 8" X 10" and made of solid wood. Each was priced at $1.00 but after the half price discount, they came to $0.50 each or 2/$1.00! I knew that I could make these frames look like new with a little paint so I couldn't pass up the deal.

To refinish these frames I first removed the backing and glass. I then used a small towel with some soapy water to wash the frames. I also cleaned the glasses while they were removed with glass cleaner.

To keep it economical and use what products I had on hand, I decided to paint my frames with some Acrylic Paint that I got at Walmart for $0.50. I used a black paint with a gloss finish.

Paint Brush Tip: Keep your brush in a baggie between coats to keep the paint from drying on your brush and making the bristles hard.

These frames actually did not have hooks on them so I had to add some. I had the hooks from a frame kit that I purchased from the Dollar Spot at Target last year. I know that they sell these kits at Dollar Tree regularly also.

Since the frames are wooden, it took less than a minute to add a hook to each frame.

Here is how one of the frames turned out:

I don't have a purpose for the other yet but at least it will match when I do.

  1. Excellent! I have found that the dollar store frames don't hold up very well over time though. They also won't stand for much changing of pictures in them either. The little metal things on the back that holds the picture in will break. But I never thought about adding the hanger to the back. The $1 frames that have hangers on the back also don't hold up over time. Thanks, Hon!
