How To Do Wednesday: How To Organize Your Kitchen Cabinets

I purchased my home about 2 1/2 years ago. Since then, I have been slowly decorating, organizing, and remodeling the house room by room with an end never really in sight. But, I am always getting inspired and I love to DIY so why not keep changing it up?

This Spring I want to focus on my kitchen so to motivate myself to get going on my plans, I am starting with the inside of my kitchen cabinets. I do not have a lot of cabinets so I really needed to buy organizers. After lots of shopping around, I found that Walmart products (in-store) along with some DIY ideas would be my best option.

DIY Lazy Susan 
$3.00- All of your supplies can be purchased at Dollar Tree.

What You Will Need
  • 2-Round Cake Pans 
  • 1-Bag of Marbles


    • Directions
    1. Add all of your marbles to one of your cake pans


    2. Place the second cake pan on top of the first pan.


    And now you have a Lazy Susan! This is great for extra condiments or spices in your cabinets. I will show you how I used it. I love this!

    After doing my Amazon research, one large shelf alone starts at $9.99 so this is such an amazing deal!

    About the size of a standard dinner plate. Fits nicely in a cabinet corner.


    Magazine Holder
    Goodwill- $0.50


    This was brand new but as you can see, the corner is a bit bent. It actually fits perfectly in the cabinet when turned with the mouth out. (see below) I am currently using this to store pasta. It is nice because I can see all of them at once.

    I opted for chalkboard labels so that they could be changed easily. I only used one label from the pack in this project.

    Extra Tip: Ditch Your Silverware Tray!

    These long baskets were purchased at Dollar Tree (3-Pack/ $1.00) and allow room for other items in the drawer. I keep my baggies, bag clips, and plastic ware all in the same drawer.


    Since I don't have a ton of space I limit the amount of food and dishes that I keep in the cabinets. While one pack worked for my upper cabinets, I still need more solutions for the lowers. There will eventually be a Part Two, Kitchen Cabinet Organization. Part two will include food cabinets 2 & 3, Tupperware, and pots and pans. Exciting stuff, people!

      Great ideas! I love the baskets in the silverware drawer but the man who lived in this house before we bought it built his own drawer. He put in dividers of wood and nailed them in. Stupid, if you ask me. I did want to say be careful about your lazy susan though. You wouldn't want to knock it out of the cabinet and spill the marbles all over!

        It is not going to move! :) That would be funny and frustrating if it did though. That sucks! I have some weird cabinets. Eventually they are getting ripped out but I will make do for now. I am going to add hardware and refinish the wood soon!

    Trial Tuesday: Removing Printed Labels From Plastic

    So if you have been following my blog. you know that I have really been getting more organized in 2015. One way that I continue to add new items to my home is to recycle the products that I use. Recently, I came across this Pin that I wanted to try out for baking ingredient storage: find this tutorial on www.hometalk.com Now while this idea is very clever I wasn't sure if I would use paint to redo the cans that I have. This got me thinking about another Pin that I saw on Pinterest about removing printed labels with nail polish remover. Found on www.2busybrunettes.com After I saw this Pin, I checked it out on YouTube and with thin plastic, it does work. With this in mind I wondered if I could remove the label from the Folgers Container. Which brings us to this weeks trial. TRIAL What You Will Need: Before: Directions: Fold a piece of paper towel and soak it in nail polish remover.  Place nail polish soaked paper towel on the label for 5 minutes.

    Trial Tuesday: Removing Scratches From Wood

    If you haven't figured it out by now, furniture is not made like it used to be. For this reason, when looking for wooden pieces I usually opt for the old, heavy wooden pieces over the plywood of today. So, when I look for furniture, it's typically at a thrift store or rummage sale. I take such pride in finding pieces and repurposing them. You can take something old and make it like new with a little effort. While repainting furniture can be fun, it is even better when you find a piece that just needs a good cleaning. So when I came across the Pin below, I was very curious to see if this technique worked. TRIAL What You Will Need 1/2 Cup Olive Oil 1/2 Cup Vinegar Wash Cloth Before Directions Mix vinegar and oil. Use a wash cloth to apply the mixture to your scratch. Repeat steps if necessary. After Results: FAIL Note that literally nothing happens.
