Makeup Monday: Hair Straightener Beauty Basics

This week, for the last installment of Beauty Basics- Hair Tools, I am bringing you a simple post of how to use a hair straightener. While the hair straightener is probably the easiest tool to use, if not used properly you can really damage your hair. So, for some important tips and tricks, keep reading.

If you missed them and are are interested, check out my Curling Iron and Hot Roller tutorials after reading this post.

My Hair
Air-dried while awake. This is a very tame version of my hair.

Directions
1. Apply heat protecting spray and comb your hair. I am currently using Tresemme but there are many different brands. And I little goes a long way. I actually prefer the John Freda Heat Protecting Spray.

You are going to make your main part at this point as well.

2. Next you are going to use a clip or hair tie to part your hair in a half-up pony tail.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is skipping this step. You cannot straighten your hair from top to bottom without damaging it by splitting your hair, so it needs to be separated.

3. Start as close as you can to your head and pull straight down, slowly.

The less hair that you use at one time, the faster your hair will straighten. Be patient.

4. Bring more hair down from the top and straighten it.

uneven part =appearance of bald spots :)

To avoid breaking you want to keep starting at the root of the hair chunk.

5. Take the clip out completely. Straighten the crown piece first.

Take the chunk and pull forward to straighten.

You will notice when putting it back that there will be a natural bump in your hair.

Finish off with the sides and face frame.

6. Add hair spray to seal out moisture.

7. Comb your hair again to style.

And you are done.

MOST IMPORTANT TIP
Read the directions on your hair straightener! Another big mistake that people make is making your straightener too hot or cool for your hair type. The directions for all straighteners come with a chart that tells you the proper temperature, so figure out what that is ASAP!

**Thanks for reading. Did I miss anything? Leave it in the comments below. Happy Monday!**

  1. You are so good at instructions in small steps. I don't need hair straightening though; it's naturally poker straight!
