Makeup Monday: Maintaining and Penciling Eyebrows

I was recently talking makeup with some friends and we got into a discussion about eyebrows. We all have eyebrows that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, thicknesses, colors, and textures so they can be difficult to maintain. If you want to learn more about what shape eyebrows are right for you, how to maintain your eyebrows, and how to fill them in using a brow pencil please keep reading!

Eyebrow Shapes by Face Shape

Find the right shape brow for your face. You should stick with this shape for the long haul. You can train your brows to grow a certain way by plucking often.

Brow Placement
The perfect brow aligns with your nose. Use a pencil to find where your eyebrow should start, arch, and end.

Plucking Your Eyebrows
Pluck often! Plucking your hairs as they come in keeps your eyebrows the shape that you desire. To pluck your eyebrows, use a tweezers to pull the hair out in the direction that it grows to remove the entire root.

Trimming Your Eyebrows
If you are like me, your eyebrows can tend to grow a little long. Simple maintenance can be done at home with the help of a makeup spool brush and pair of scissors. Simply brush your hair upward and trim straight across. You want to avoid trimming your arch.

My Favorite Pencils
I have very dark brown/ light black eyebrows so its has been a struggle to find a natural looking color. Eventually, I am going to invest in a nice brow kit but for now, I will stick with my pencils.

Revlon Brow Fantasy
Color: Dark Brown
$5.89- $6.89

Lasts all day and has a built in liquid sealer!

COVERGIRL Brow and Eye Marker Pencil
Color: Midnight Black
$3.99/ 2 pack

The dark brown version of this pencil is more red than brown. I would not recommend it unless you have light enough brows to pull that off.

Brow Penciling Tutorial
I am not wearing any other makeup but the brow pencils in these photos because I wanted to show how they worked naturally. Keep in mind that you can add a contour above and below the brow to make them appear more natural.

My Natural Eyebrows

1. Line your eyebrow starting at the inner top corner to the arch. Don't worry about thickening the line at this point, it probably won't be necessary.

see the two lines that I drew?
2. Draw a small line from the inner top of your eyebrow to the bottom corner.

3. Fill in sparse spots of your brow. Make small lines that look natural by applying the pencil in an upward motion.

4. Draw or enhance your arch. Try to make it look as natural as possible. Remember the tips above when finding the highest point in your eyebrow.

5. End your eyebrow at the proper length. Use the pencil that you are using to find the end of your brow with ease every time.

6. Seal your brows with eyeshadow or a brow gel.
