Makeup Monday: DIY Makeup Brush Cleaners

Makeup brushes are so great for makeup because they can pick up a lot of product on the bristles and apply with precision. They are also great for blending.Makeup brushes are great to reduce bacteria/oil transfer from your hands to your face and can reduce breakouts.

Over time, your brushes will collect bacteria from the used makeup, along with oil from your skin, and dust from storage. With all of that begin said, it should go without saying that it is important to clean them often. Today, I am going to show you three different ways to use things that you can find in your home to clean your makeup brushes.

Bar Soap Method
  • New bar of soap
  • Paper towel
  • Small bowl of water

1. Dip one end of the bar of soap into your water dish.

  2. Rub brush onto bar of soap.
Your bar will end up looking something like this.

3. Dip brush in clean water. Do not submerge the head or the bristles may loosen and fall out.

4. Pat dry on paper towel.

Dish Soap Method
  • Dish soap
  • Wash Cloth
  • Paper towel
  • Bowl of clean water

1. Apply a dime-sized amount of dish soap on a damp wash cloth.

 2. Rub brush on wash cloth.
Be sure that you don't use a white wash cloth because it will end up looking like this.

3. Dip brush in clean water.

4. Pat dry on a paper towel. Let air-dry over night. This method works EXTREMELY well!

Shampoo and Water Method
  • 1 Tablespoon Shampoo (Baby Shampoo preferred)
  • 1 Cup Water
  • Paper towel

1. Mix shampoo and water.

2. Dip bristles into your mixture. Be sure that you do not submerge the head of the brush.

This is a loose powder brush so the water became pretty dirty.

4. Pat dry on a clean paper towel. Let air-dry overnight.

Be sure that your brushes are completely dry before you use them again so that you don't ruin your makeup.

If you are building a makeup collection and like wearing makeup, I would highly suggest investing in makeup brushes if you don't already have them to save your skin. You can find some great brushes for very reasonable prices on Amazon.com but be sure to read the comments before you buy.
