DIY: Refinished Furniture WITHOUT Sanding!
BEFORE, scroll down for after |
Materials Needed:
- Wooden furniture of your choice
- 1 Quart Glidden Gripper Grey Primer
- Wood filler (if needed)
- 1 Quart Behr Premium Plus Paint and Primer Stain Blocking
- 2 Paint brushes
- Mini Sponge Roller (4” kits are available at Home Depot for $5)
- Spray Paint or new hardware for the handles if any
Directions:
1. Remove all
hardware from your furniture. Wipe down the furniture with water and a mild
soap. Let dry completely.
2. Use wood filler to
fill any imperfections. Drying time of wood filler varies so you will have to avoid priming that area until the filler completely dries. If there
are no imperfections, you can just skip this step.
3. Use a paint brush to apply the first coat of primer. Let that coat dry for at least an hour
and then apply a second coat.
4. Apply the paint
with a sponge roller after letting the primer dry for at least 8 hours. You
want to wait in order to make sure that the primer bonds to the wood. If the primer is not completely dry, you will not get the true color of your paint.
5. Use second paint
brush to get what the roller missed. Use sponge roller to re-smooth paint
if necessary. Let the paint dry for another 8 hours.
6. Final coat of
paint with roller. Touch up any spots with paint brush.
The color is Behr Espresso Beans, purchased at Home Depot. The Handles are Rustoleum Metallic Silver Spray Paint plus Primer |
I also did this to a night stand that I had. Unfortunately, I did not get a "before" picture of the nightstand to match but you get the idea.
Tips
-Dollar Tree paint brushes work
just as well as any other, especially for priming
-Old furniture knobs are smaller
than what is standard today so you probably will have to paint them. Rustoleum
Metallic Sprays work great and gives a clean finish. They also have antique
style sprays that would look great!
-Google “behr painted cabinet refinish colors” to see tons of color options!
