Thrifty Thursday: DIY- Cheap Halloween Decorations

Halloween is almost here so I wanted to do a few DIY projects to add to my Halloween decor collection. This DIY tutorial will include a few different Halloween frame ideas, mason jar/flameless candle ideas, Halloween magnets, and a Halloween party favor idea. Most of the items were purchased at the Dollar Tree or were items that I already had.

3-D Frame
1. Buy any sized frame that you would like. I chose to get a few 4X6 frames from Dollar Tree.

2. Remove the picture from the frame and use as a template to cut your design.
I used Halloween treat bags left over from last to fill the frames that I purchased. But, you can always print a design or even silhouette to put in them too.

3. Use little "creatures" from Dollar Tree or any store that sells Halloween party favors to add to the frame.
And you have a neat 3-D frame!

Googly Eyeball Frame
1. Use any sized frame with a flat surface and the image of your choice.

These are from Dollar Tree and you get 125 different sized googly eyes for just $1.

2. Hot glue the eyeballs to your frame. You can chose your own pattern but make sure that you decide where the next eyeball will go before you start gluing them down.

Halloween Mason Jars

Ghost
1. Get a mason jar. They are now available at Dollar Tree in various sizes. I believe that this is the quart-sized jar. You can also buy them in bulk at Target and Walmart.

2. Use a sheet of gift tissue paper to measure out the length of the jar. You should only need one sheet for this project.

3. Cut the sheet into strips that are the full length of the mason jar.

4. Use Mod Podge and a sponge paint brush to glue your strips to the jar. It is better to overlap the top of the jar. Don't worry, the lid will go back on but wait until it the glue dries!
Apply the Mod Podge to both the glass of the mason jar and a layer on top of the tissue paper.

5. Glue on googly eyes and use paint to add a mouth. Add ribbon around the lid to add a more decorative touch.

Pumpkin
1. Repeat steps with orange sheets. I didn't have orange so I layered yellow on top of red. It looks more yellow-tinted but I like the actually liked the effect of two colors layered on top of each other.  I just used construction paper to make the face and glued that on as well. I also added a green ribbon to the lid.

2. Add a flameless candle and enjoy your new jars. I got a three pack from the Dollar Spot at Target recently, and I know that they also sell them at Dollar Tree so they are cheap.

Ooooo... spooky!!!

Creature Magnets
1. Get round magnets from your local craft store. This pack is $1.25 for 10 magnets at JoAnn's.

2. Use hot glue to add your magnets to your creatures.

3. Decorate your refrigerator or anything else that is magnetized. I decorated my dry-erase board with a few of the magnets that I made.

Broomstick Treat Bag
1. Collect larger sticks from your yard. I would allow them to dry out in the basement for at least a day to avoid getting bugs in your candy.

 2. Use candy to partially fill brown lunch bags.

You could also just fill the bag with crumbled up paper if you want to use these brooms as decor.

3. Add your stick and secure with a twine. You can always personalize these bags, too!
If you have a plastic cauldron, you can always place it in front of the sticks with candy inside.
